Home for the Holidays Weeks 2, 3, & 4

Let’s get all caught up on the Home for the Holidays sew along. These blocks are turning out so pretty with the Peppermint Bark fabric collection and they are huge! Let me show you what I’ve got done so far.

Week 2: Waiting for Santa

This week really stumped me. There are so many half square triangles in this one block and I almost wanted to skip it. Yes, we have the ability to skip a block in this sew along! Sherri and Chelsi will be offering a couple bonus blocks at some point, so I was very tempted to pass on this one. I’m so glad I didn’t though! This block is stunning and and well worth all the work! But my goodness, look at all those half square triangles.

I had a hard time deciding how many fabrics to choose and which colors I should use, so this is what I did. I chose fourteen different fabrics, cut three squares from each, and then played around with color placement.

By doing it this way I did have three extra half square triangles that I did not end up using, but I did like having the option to pick and choose what I liked in the order I felt was pleasing to the eye. Like I said before, this block was a lot of work, but I would do it again because it turned out so cool. I’m so happy this will be in my holiday quilt!

Week 3: Peppermint Twist

If you are looking for a beginner friendly block, then this is your week! Actually, this felt more like making two beginner friendly blocks and then sewing them together. In this week we made the cross block and the twist block. I decided the cross block was perfect for my favorite fabric in the collection.

I also wanted to use some really classic christmas colors and chose a darker green to compliment the red in the twist block.

This block came together really quick! It was nice to sew an easy block after last weeks half square triangle fiasco.

Week 4: Christmas Star

This is probably my favorite block of all time! I mean of any block I have ever made in my quilting journey so far. Yes, that’s a big deal.

First off, I LOVE Christmas. If I could live in Christmas Town, I would, and I would stay there all year long. This block just screams Christmas to me with the big beautiful tree and the cute little star in the corner. I can see this block in so many different colorways that I may have to make a whole quilt out of it! Probably not this year, but it’s in my planner for next year.

I’m happy I decided to mix some aqua in with the green in this tree. It blends really well and was a smart way to use the aqua. Once I stepped back I knew it needed a strong pop of color in the star. I decided to make the star a deep red and I chose a grunge red to make it really stand out.

Good thing Sherri and Chelsi are doing videos with this sew along, because I didn’t realize I could change the color under the tree until I saw their blocks. So I chose a nice medium fabric for the tree to sit on, and it just added to the charm!

Heads up this block does have a lot of seams to it and takes a good amount of time to put together, but it is so worth it in the end. I guess that’s the theme of this sew along so far! A lot of work, but well worth it!

I hope you are enjoying this sew along and watching these blocks come to life! Let me know in the comments below what you think. See you next week!
