Oh, Happy Day! Week 2 & Week 3

Sometimes if I’m not sure what to do with a block or project, I’ll walk away from it and come back to it later. It helps clear my mind when I’ve been staring at it for a while. Usually when I come back to it, I’ll know immediately if I like what I’ve done so far and what I want to do next. That is what happened with this sew along when I did block 2! So let’s dive into weeks 2 & 3 and talk about these amazing blocks.

Week 2: Friends Forever Block

Be prepared! My block does not look like Corey Yoder’s block and I’ll tell you why.

I had a moment when I got to this step in the block. I was supposed to add the white background fabric to the top right corner, sew it down, and then chop off half this block to make it one big half square triangle. I just couldn’t do it. This is one block I had to walk away from, not look at for a few days, come back, and I knew exactly how I felt. I saw this block at this step and fell in love with it! All that color is just beautiful. Nothing is wrong with Corey’s version, I just like it this way better! So here is week 2! I’m keeping it this way and I’m hear to tell you, it’s okay to make changes to patterns as you go.

Week 3: Oh, Happy Day Block

This week I decided to follow the block pattern exactly as written, except I did decide to use two background fabrics instead of one. What can I say? I like to make it my own!

I found this block to be a lot of fun to sew. So far, it’s my favorite one we have made in the sew along because you start with some strip sewing. There is something so satisfy about sewing strips together and then cutting them down.

This little trick helps the accuracy of cutting and sewing small squares together. I did follow Corey’s instructions and pressed to the side which helped this whole block nest beautifully together.

I decided to use this gorgeous background fabric with the drawn flowers and put it in the middle sashing of the block. It pairs perfectly with the rest of the fabric choices and gives the block a more interesting look.

I’m officially all caught up on this sew along! Do you ever walk away from a project to clear your head? Let me know in the comments below. See you next week!
