Christmastime Week 3

Does anyone out there still send Christmas cards anymore? Well I remember when that was the thing to do around the holidays. It was pretty cool to get all this fun mail that had nothing to do with bills and see all the pretty family photos of everyone. We would even display them in our living room and count how many we got that year!

This week Fat Quarter Shop released their third block for the Christmastime sew along called Christmas Cards. I have to admit, I didn’t know what I was looking at when the pattern first released. It wasn’t until I stared at it for a good 5-10 minutes that I finally saw standing cards! I can’t be the only one, right? Anyway, let’s get to the fun part and pick out our fabrics!

I had a lot of fun choosing the fabrics for this week’s block. I changed it up again and decided on a lighter background. I made the cards with bold colors of red and green and used some medium prints for the flying geese units.

I have to admit, I loved making all those tiny flying geese units. Oh my goodness, they were so cute and you end up with a bunch of them! Also note that I decided to press them open.

When sewing the flying geese units together, keep in mind you have a few points to line up. I definitely used my pins here to keep my sewing as accurate as possible.

I did a lot chain piecing when sewing this block together. It had way more seams than I expected and the block is much longer than I thought it would be.

Though I tend to want to press all of my seams open, you’ll see here I did press to the side here and there. Sometimes the fabric will speak to you and let you know what it wants to do. When that happens, it’s better to work with the fabric rather than forcing it to press a certain way that it’s being resistant to.

I’m so happy with my color choices now that it’s put together! The flying geese units in the middle are absolutely adorable and I was able to use a lot of different fabrics in this one block.

Here is what I have so far with the first three blocks together. This scrappy background idea seems to be working out great so far!

I can’t believe there is only one mystery block left and we’re almost done. Time just flew by! See you all next week!
